Barbara Becker Simon Workshops throughout Australia
It is with great excitement and pleasure that the PMC Guild Aus/NZ announces that our visiting artist for 2008 will be the brilliant Metalwork and Glass Artist, Barbara Becker Simon from the USA. This year’s program will see the Guild work closely with Glass Bead Makers groups around Australia, allowing attendees at workshops to access her complete range of skills. Workshops covering glass, metal clay and a combined glass and metal clay class will be held in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane between October-November 2008.
Barbara has been a jeweller for over thirty-five years and a glass bead artist since 1996. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in metalwork and jewellery from the University of Wisconsin. Barbara has been working with PMC for almost 10 years and has won numerous awards, and her work graces the pages of many books on the subjects of metal clay & lampworking, with articles regularly appearing in Lapidary Journal, Art Jewellery and Studio PMC magazines. Her speciality of Hollow Core Vessels is one class that she will be teaching.
"I have been an artist all my life. I can't remember when I wasn't drawing or making something. Within the first week of jewellery class in college, I knew that this was where I wanted to be: designing and creating art to wear and when introduced to the world of lampworking, I was gleefully consumed with the drive to create small, intimate objects in glass. Manipulating hot glass is, for me, an exciting, joyful process. When I can combine my glass with my metalwork, I feel that the best of both worlds has been achieved."
Barbara's classes will be offered in the first instance to Guild members, with any vacancies left being offered to the general public. It should be noted, that her classes are not at a beginner level, and Guild members who would like to attend glass workshops with Barbara are urged to contact their local Lampwork Glass Suppliers to begin the process of understanding this wonderful art form. Likewise, glass artists wanting to learn some of her amazing PMC techniques should be seeking qualified teachers to update their skill level prior to her arrival.
If last year's tour by Robert Dancik is anything to go by, the program will once again be a resounding success with demand far outweighing availability in many venues. Guild members will have advance notice of the workshops, another reason to ensure your membership is up to date including your email address.
